RIP Chef Lentswe Bhengu: Five Things About Him

Celebrity Chef Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko, cookbook author, died on Tuesday, 28 February after a brief illness. He was well-known for his work as a TV co-host on BBC Lifestyle show The Great SA Bake Off, SABC3’s Expresso as a guest chef, Mzansi Magic’s Celebrity Mystery Box, and other shows.

The Bhengu and Mafoko families announced in a statement on Wednesday, 1 March, that Chef Lentswe Bhengu-Mafok, host of The Great SA Bake Off and Celebrity Mystery Box TV, died on Tuesday, 28 February, after a brief illness.

“It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the untimely passing of our beloved son and brother Lentswe Bhengu-Mafoko, fondly known to the media and his culinary family as Chef Lentswe.”

“Lentswe had the misfortune of suffering a short illness and succumbed last night, 28th of February 2023 at Sandton Medi-Clinic.”

“The Mafoko and Bhengu families welcome your prayers and request some time to privately mourn the passing of our beloved son,” the family said in a statement.

WHERE WAS BHENGU BORN?

YouthVillage reports that 37-year-old chef Bhengu-Mafoko was born in 1986 and raised in KwaZulu-Natal. He started off playing in investment finance before following his passion as a chef. He enrolled at The Culinary Academy in Cape Winelands in 2010, five years after working in finance and graduated as a professional chef underwritten by City and Guilds.

HIS YOUTUBE CHANNEL

News24 reports that Chef Lentswe launched his TV career by filming and sharing cooking videos on YouTube after graduating. He signed on as the host of Africa on a Plate, a show that incorporated cooking with travel and culture, which ran for two seasons.

HE ‘DATED’ LANGA MAVUSO

Fakaza reported in July 2022 that the deceased Chef celebrated his RnB singer boyfriend Langa Mavuso’s birthday by sharing a sweet message on Instagram.

It is reported the RnB singer and the chef had broken up at the time of his death as they deleted each other’s pictures on their social media accounts.
