The majority of roads yesterday led to the star-studded musical festival Amstel and Friends. A music festival that featured AKA, DJ Zinhle and husband Murdah Bongz, and the much-anticipated South African debut of Nigerian-born but internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Tems.

Most performances were praised. Anele Zondo is being dragged. She was hired as a festival MC. It made sense at the time since she was a Massiv Music host and has stated on social media that she is in demand.
Zondo clearly appeals to a niche festival crowd, as the Amstel and Friends crowd was unimpressed. Everyone had a story about why Zondo was a bad festival host.
Zondo’s indecency angers some. She was too comfortable using the b-word with festivalgoers. If the crowd was all millennials and 2ks, it might have gone differently.

Second, was the fact that some are suggesting that Zondo wanted to use her time on stage as a host to share her vocal prowess. This is as she would sing random songs which did not gel with the music played by the DJs she was supporting. Or the fact that the crowd was forced to listen to her even when they did not want to. There is a lot she is being dragged for.

But perhaps it’s a good thing that her music career is taking off. Zondo recently released her sophomore single Slim Thick, which features Nadia Nakai. The upbeat Hip-Hop single, which sounds like a “hot girl summer” soundtrack, has been doing well on the radio charts. This is due to the extent to which Nakai has used her celebrity to promote the single.
So maybe it’s time for Zondo to retire from hosting and focus solely on her career as an influencer and rapper.
