Here Are SA Celebs Who’ve Been To Jail – Trevor Noah, Khanya & More

The shocking crimes committed by celebrity beauty doctor Nandipha Magudumana and her partner Thabo Bester have led us to uncover additional South African celebrities, like Trevor Noah, Samthing Soweto, Maggie Benedict, and Khanya Mgangisa, who have committed crimes and spent time in prison.

From comedian Trevor Noah to singer Samthing Soweto and actors Maggie Benedict to Khanya Mgangisa, here’s a list of South African celebrities who have served time in prison.

KHANYA MKANGISA

City Press reports that The Queen and Unmarried actress Khanya Mkangisa reportedly spent a night in jail after attempting to flee the scene of a car accident that she caused in Randburg, Johannesburg in January 2019 and after getting in a high-speed car chase with the police.

SAMTHING SOWETO

Musician Samkelo Mdolomba aka Samnthing Soweto reportedly spent two and a half months in jail on allegations of armed robbery. City Press reveals that this happened just after he became a member of the award-winning music group The Soil.

Mdolombo revealed in a 2017 interview with Sowetan Live: “My friends and I had a gun, and we did some terrible things and we got caught. I was found guilty, and I got a suspended sentence because I was a first-time offender”.

MAGGIE BENEDICT

Popular Generations actress Maggie Benedict was reportedly arrested in 2013 for stealing a box of headache tablets valued at R17.49 from a shop in Johannesburg.

She was exonerated nearly two years later when the judge ruled there wasn’t enough evidence to prove that she stole the tablets.

Briefly reported in 2019 that Benedict was accused of bleaching her baby’s skin and her child ended up in the hospital after their skin reacted badly to an unknown chemical.

She reportedly confirmed she was using bleach on her baby’s skin for three days after it was revealed her Caucasian boyfriend at the time said if the child was too dark, then it was not his. The actress was then arrested at the hospital while her baby was getting treatment.

TREVOR NOAH

Actor and comedian Trevor Noah revealed in an interview with the entertainment news website Vulture that he had a run-in with the law when he was a teenager.

Noah reportedly took a car from his stepfather’s workshop to buy cheap phones that he planned to resell for cash.

He was pulled over by the police, who discovered that the plates on the “borrowed” car did not match the car’s original registration, spent a week in jail, and was released on bail paid by his mother.

“Noah was arrested on suspicion of theft and was jailed for a week”.
