“I Told You To Have A Gun” – Burna Boy’s Tribute To AKA

Burna Boy appears to have broken his silence on his former bestie AKA’s death after days of silence.

But instead of issuing a statement or sending a video message, the Nigerian hitmaker shared his thoughts on AKA’s death through what appeared to be song lyrics!

Last Friday, a South African rapper was shot and killed outside a Florida Road hotspot in Durban.

AKA and Burna Boy had a rocky relationship that ended in a falling out.

‘SEEN THAT VIDEO…DIDNT WANT YOU DEAD’

Taking to his Instagram Stories, Burna Boy alluded to the death of AKA.

Without naming him, the Grammy-award-winning artist posted what appeared to be song lyrics.

He shared:

“WTF is all of that about/

I just heard he died, seen that video at that restaurant/

Took me out of a positive mood/

Took me back to that day when you saw my [gun emoji] and you said I was wild/

Then I told you you should have one too/

Cuz it weren’t like niggaz wasn’t dying but I thought you knew/

And I ain’t really f**k wit you/

But I didn’t want you dead, it was like that with me and you/

Wicked! /

I hope they catch whoever did you wicked/

I hope you rest in peace, even though we ain’t kick it/

At the end of the day we some grown ass niggaz”

AKA & BURNA BOY BEEF EXPLAINED

Following several xenophobic attacks in 2019, Burna Boy elicited anger from South Africans in a Twitter rant.

In it, he encouraged black foreigners living in SA to “defend and protect themselves” against SA attackers. He also warned rapper AKA to “beef up security” in a threatening tweet that has since been deleted. This after, tweeps took offence to an old tweet by AKA throwing shade at the Nigerian soccer team.

AKA retaliated by demanding an apology from Burna Boy, who refused.

He tweeted: “All we want is an apology. We know SA is not perfect, but we took you in as our own before you reached these levels. You say you are an African giant; prove it”.

A few months later, Burna Boy was set to perform in the country in the Africans Unite anti-xenophobic concert at the Sun Arena. Burna was set to share the stage with fellow Nigerian star Jidenna and SA rapper Kwesta.

AKA caught wind of the concert and tweeted: “I would love to attend this show and watch this man put hands on me in my own country.”

He added: “See you soon, Burna Boy.”

However, the concert was canceled due to public backlash and threats of violence.

AKA: I HAVE NO BEEF WITH BURNA BOY

But despite their past, Burna Boy surprisingly performed his collaboration with AKA, the 2014 track All Eyes on Me, during his performance at the DStv Delicious Festival in September 2022 – his first visit to the country since his controversial tweets.

However, it was a solo for the Naija singer who left out AKA and fellow collaborators Da L.E.S and JR out of the song.

At the time, tweeps tagged AKA in their tweets, demanding to know if and when the local rapper would call a truce with his former friend.

“Can you squash the beef? We need you both to perform All Eyes On Me the next time we come through for your concert”, posted one tweep.

To which AKA responded: “I have no problem with Burna at all. God Bless my brother”.

While AKA may have reconciled with Burna, it’s unclear if the feelings were ever reciprocated.
