Rapper Emtee Is Now Free As His Wife Withdraws GBV Charges

Rapper Emtee, real name Mthembeni Ndevu, is now free after his wife, Nicole Kendall Chinsamy, dropped the GBV case against him.

According to the Sunday World, the award-winning rapper appeared before the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 2 May, and was immediately allowed to leave since his wife had forgiven him.

Nicole stated in a statement that she forgives the musician for the sake of their two children, Avery and Logan, as well as their unborn child.

However, Emtee’s lawyer, Dumisani Motsamai, said that while they welcome the withdrawal, the rapper has mixed emotions because he has been robbed of the opportunity to prove his innocent before the court.

“There will always be this cloud hanging over his head that he is a woman basher regardless of the charges being withdrawn. This is the image he will forever carry in the court of public opinion. The withdrawal of the charges by the complainant is there- fore met with mixed emotions by the accused,” his lawyer wrote in a statement to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

In addition, the Corner Store rapper’s team reportedly rejected the NPA’s push for anger management classes. His lawyer said that although a diversion programme is not considered punishment, it is a form of rehabilitation for past offenders and his client does not tick that box.

“It is an intervention that is typically offered as an alternative sentence to accused people whom the court believes ought to be afforded an opportunity to be corrected and thereafter be reintegrated back into society,” Motsamai wrote.

On 25 April, when Emtee appeared at the same court, his mother, Phathiswa Ndevu, Drum Magazine that the truth will soon be revealed.

Phathiswa said that she was against people using abuse to settle scores.

According to the publication, a heavily pregnant Nicole arrived to court when proceedings were done. At the time, the State prosecutor revealed that the complainant had filed for withdrawal, however, they are postponing.

“The truth of the person who is being abused will be revealed. It is wrong to use something like this because it can tarnish his image forever, but everything will be revealed, the real person who is being abused is the person who was able to come to court early today,” she said.

Nicole made her allegations of abuse on Emtee’s Instagram Live in March.

The father-of-two was seen arguing with his mother-in-law, who said she was at his house to protect her daughter from him.

Soon later, Nicole shared a photo of her bruised and swollen eye from the claimed assault.

“This is what he did to me,” she says. “Show them what you did to me, how you beat me up on Valentine’s Day here’s the proof,” she tells Emtee.

“Here’s the proof. Beat me up while I’m seven months pregnant,” she adds.

Emtee denied the claims during the live video and on Twitter.
