Thabo Bester, a convicted rapist, murderer, and fraudster, celebrated his birthday after escaping from his Mangaung jail cell weeks earlier, one year ago.
This time, he is firmly imprisoned at the Kgosi Mampuru prison.
On June 13, 2023, Bester will turn 37 years old. He now has an identity document for the first time in his life, which was provided to him in recent weeks by the Department of Home Affairs.
On Thabo Bester’s birthday, many South Africans remembered him on Twitter.

Last year, Bester faked his death and escaped prison on 3 May with the help of prison officials and his alleged girlfriend, Nandipha Magudumana.
Bester would take refuge in Magudumana’s Hyde Park home, where he managed to fly under the radar.
Two weeks later, he would be photographed shopping in a Woolworths store in Sandton. The photo would only make headlines months later when his mysterious disappearance would finally be investigated.

Thabo Bester – who is expected to make his next court appearance on 20 June at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court – is currently under lock and key at the Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria.
Bester is being kept at the C-Max prison – a maximum security division – which will afford him the following…
- 24-hour surveillance
- Round-the-clock contact with “selected high trade correctional officers.”
- Assurance that he will not be able to harm himself or others
- Bester was also seen being escorted to the prison in a police Nyala – a bullet-proof vehicle of maximum security.
Meanwhile, South Africans are reflecting on Thabo Bester’s “birthday celebrations” in 2018 in a video that went viral.
That year, Bester – under an alleged accomplice – registered an event and production company called 21st Century Media. This, while he was imprisoned in Magaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein.
Bester, allegedly under the alias Tom Motsepe, claimed to be based in New York. He also claimed to be linked to South African millionaire Patrice Motsepe.
On June 2018 – Bester’s actual birthday – the company hosted a huge launch party at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton, which was attended by celebrities such as Amanda du Pont and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. The beautiful black-tie event was MC’d by leading ladies Nomzamo Mbatha and Thabile Ngwato.
