Netflix has released the first trailer for the upcoming season of its original series King of Joburg. After a whirlwind first season, the series returns with another thrilling season that, by all accounts, will be memorable.
With the death of Joburg’s king, Simon Masire, the family must adjust to a new king and new enemies in the City of Gold.
The Masire family will return to Netflix on January 27, 2023, with all guns blazing. In this riveting new season, the Masires, haunted by a supernatural family curse, become entangled in a web of betrayal that threatens to destroy the family.
The eight-part, action-drama series picks up from a successful first season which saw fragmented family structures, treacherous brotherhoods and a deal with the devil. The maiden Netflix series from Ferguson Films and Samad Davis Production, starred the late filmmaker and actor Shona Ferguson onscreen and behind the camera. Ferguson portrayed the character of Simon “Vader” Masire and was also credited as an executive producer of the show. The sequel sees executive producer & showrunner Samad Davis and executive producer Connie Ferguson teaming up again in what they both described as a tribute to the late great Shona.
Reprising their roles are South Africa’s finest talent including Connie Ferguson, Zolisa Xaluva, Thembi Seethe, Cindy Mahlangu, Nnekwa Tsajwa, Buhle Samuels, Thapelo Mokoena, TK Sebothoma and Altovise Lawrence.

Controversial entertainment blogger Musa Khawula, who trashed Connie for taking on a lead role on the show recently, has come under fire. “Connie sits back and nurse your grandchildren and give people who are talented a chance,” he said.
In 2020, Shona told ZAlebs that the term #OpenUpTheIndustry is misused by bullies to bring other actors down. According to him, casting actors away from a show due to their previous role in another production is an unfair practice.
“The term “recycling actors” is very insulting to actors in our industry. Actors act. That’s what they do for a living. Saying because they’ve been on 1 project they should be cast away and someone new must be cast is unfair. I have never cared for this particular phrase “open up the industry” because it’s what we do every day of our lives. We open up the industry to new and old talent. We open up the industry to the world.”
“We give hundreds of actors work opportunities every single year, we give long term work to loyal hard-working actors and crew, so “Open Up the industry” is, unfortunately, a statement that is misused by bullies to tear others down. The number one rule to getting anything worthwhile done is to never get distracted by misinformed opinions. The industry IS open. You are just not doing enough to get the attention of casting directors. Complaining will never get any door open for you. Hard work and perseverance definitely will,” explained Shona.
