DJ Maphorisa Granted Bail After Thuli Phongolo’s Withdrawal Statement

DJ Maphorisa, real name Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, was granted R4 000 bail in the assault complaint filed against him by his girlfriend Thuli Phongolo.

According to City Press, the DJ (35) appeared in Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday, May 8, where the court heard that the former Generations: The Legacy actress had submitted a withdrawal statement.

According to Magistrate Clement Mukhodobwane, the bail condition was that the accused have no direct or indirect contact with the plaintiff.

The case has been rescheduled for June 14 for further investigation.

According to Sunday World, the BaStraata hitmaker was supposed to appear before the court in the morning but ended up making his appearance in the afternoon due to loadshedding.

However, when he finally appeared, the court session was suspended for a further 10 minutes as the magistrate said Maphorisa’s legal team was not ready to address the court.

“We are still trying to gather how she is doing. I am seeing her in the next hour … We just need to actually figure out what is happening … She was with her road manager,” Thuli’s manager was quoted as saying.

Attempts to speak to Maphorisa draw a blank, however, a source close to the case revealed that the musician had tried to get bail on the spot, but it was not granted.

On Sunday, City Press reported that the 29-year-old Rockville actress had opened a case of gender-based violence (GBV) against the BlaqBoy Music record label owner.

The publication reported that the assault incident took place at the actress’ apartment in Sandton, Johannesburg.

“On Sunday 2023/5/7 at about 12pm, I was at my place of residence with my boyfriend, Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, better known as DJ Maphorisa. I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig,” said Phongolo in the statement.

She alleged that Maphorisa became aggressive and punched her on her chest, also slapping her across the face and with his elbow on her.

“He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” the statement continued.

The actress reportedly sustained bruises on her neck, chest, arms and right cheek.
